Laverton Racecourse is located just under 1000km east of Perth. It is one of Western Australia’s many country dirt tracks.

The racecourse was established by Laverton Race Club in 1956. Originally starting as a race meeting for locally bred horses, it consisted of mainly stock horses ridden by locals. The rules were a lot more relaxed, with no official weights or starting gates used. 54 horses were nominated across 6 races for the first meeting.

In the 70’s and 80’s, the club became more professional, with apprentice jockeys taking the rides with a minimum weight of 70kgs. Thoroughbreds also started making an appearance, with four of the six races for thoroughbreds and the remaining two for locally bred horses.

During this time, starting gates were used. These were manufactured locally, and this piece of history can still be seen today.

In the late 90’s, Laverton Race Club allowed professional jockeys to start riding.

The Laverton races annual race meeting is held in late October. It draws in locals and offers a wide range of entertainment including Fashions on the Field.
